There is a designated band for Southern Squares.

REGISTRATION

Please note that playing for the Open Band does not serve as your “volunteer job.”   All dancers, callers, musicians must have a volunteer slot, as well.   So please remember to sign up for a job online or at the Registration Table upon arrival.

HELPFUL TO SIGN UP IN ADVANCE TO PLAY FOR THE DANCES

Please tell Laura Light, our Music Coordinator, that you are signing up to play.   That way, you will get updates about tune lists, schedules and general information.   Include your instrument.  Those who sign up in advance will have first choice all weekend for a spot on the stage.

SETUP FOR THE CONTRA DANCES IN THE GYM

We will have two strong, designated leaders (melody and rhythm) for each half of the Friday night and Saturday night contra dances and Sunday afternoon contra dance.   They will choose the tunes by getting requests from you all and by looking over the tune list that you will have in advance.   You can choose to have a mic or not.  There will be about 12 chairs on the stage for musicians so that it doesn’t get overly crowded.   Bass players and percussion can stand.   Please be mindful of playing at least half of the dance and then getting up to give another musician your chair.  If chairs are still empty after the break, then sit back down and continue playing.   Instead of making a schedule as to who plays when, we want you all to be self-selective and aware of those who haven’t had a turn.  If you find that you haven’t had a turn for awhile,  then do tell us so that we can ask someone, who may have been playing the whole time, to  take a break.   Musicians have been very good about this in the past.

SETUP FOR OTHER DANCES

The other dances, such as Waltzes, Swing, English and Blues can have as many musicians as will.  Late-Night Blues will have a designated keyboard player,  but other instruments are welcome.

Waltz Bands:  Email Suzanne Hosch to play for Waltzes.

During the weekend, musicians can suggest other tunes to add to the list.

TUNE BOOKS , CHORD BOOKS, MUSIC STANDS

We will have multiple copies of the Portland Books 1 and 2;  Waltz Books, 1,2,3,4;  Chart Books.   Bring your own books, as well.  Bring a music stand.

STORING CASES, BACKPACKS, BOOKBAGS, ETC.

We will have a couple of racks of shelving on the stage for storing your instrument cases, jackets, book bags, backpacks, etc. Less clutter on the stage leaves more room for chairs and musicians.   Please take your stuff with you when you leave, so there’s room for the next band.
